Experts warn of weekend floods risk

Heavy rain is expected to dampen the English summer once again this weekend, with forecasters warning of more floods.

Localised storms on Sunday are expected to deliver more than 50mm of rainfall to parts of the country and homeowners in the north are again expected to bear the brunt of the conditions.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warnings for the whole of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for Sunday and Monday, while the Environment Agency said more flooding was a possibility.

Periods of rainfall on Sunday are expected to be less prolonged than a month ago, when torrential downpours caused widespread damage to homes in and around Sheffield, Doncaster and Hull, meteorologists say.

But the heavy outbreaks could cause flash flooding in some areas, with the bad weather expected to continue into Monday.

Tony Conlan, meteorologist at MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "A band of rain will be moving northwards tomorrow afternoon.

"The indications are that it will intensify over northern England during Sunday evening and night.

"Last month's floods happened because a band of rain stopped and battered a single region for 24 hours. This band of rain is moving, so we aren't expecting anything as serious."

The Environment Agency currently have two flood warnings in place, both for areas in the North East, and 18 flood watches.

Joe Giacomelli, spokesman for the Environment Agency, said: "Places are still saturated at the moment. That amount of rainfall could result in possible surface water flooding and further flood warnings being advised."
