The ex-banker sparked a backlash from members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, according to media reports.

Some members objected to the 50-year-old's application.

"His name was on the list, but now it has gone," one member told the Daily Telegraph. "There is just a blank space where his name was."

A retired doctor who has been a member of the R and A for more than 15 years told the newspaper: "If Sir Fred Goodwin has the necessary personal attributes and he wishes to become a member of the R and A, I see no reason why he should not be considered."

The club, which has about 2,400 members worldwide, has refused to discuss the media reports.

The move comes days after it was revealed an honours watchdog was considering whether it should act to strip Sir Fred of his knighthood.

Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell said the Forfeiture Committee would "look at" the situation in relation to the ex-chief executive.
