Ex-spy's widow in justice move

The wife and friends of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko are set to launch a justice foundation in his name.

Marina Litvinenko, Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky and the spy's close friend Alex Goldfarb will launch the Litvinenko Justice Foundation in Whitehall, central London.

The former KGB officer, 43, who was a vehement critic of Russian president Vladimir Putin, fell ill in November last year and died in hospital about three weeks later.

Post-mortem examinations found he was killed by a lethal dose of radioactive polonium-210. Mr Litvinenko blamed President Putin in a statement released after his death.

Human rights lawyer Louise Christian, who has won awards for her work which has included acting for the families of three Guantanamo Bay detainees, is also due to attend the launch.

Mr Berezovsky has said the foundation would be aimed at aiding investigations into the spy's death, preventing "the same terror attack" in the future, and helping compensate anyone who had suffered psychological, physical or material harm in the case.

The self-exiled tycoon was himself questioned about Mr Litvinenko's death by Russian officials in the presence of British detectives from New Scotland Yard last week.

Akhmed Zakayev, a Chechen who fought deportation from Britain to Russia, said he also met the investigators in the hope of speeding up the British inquiry.

The Met has already submitted a file of evidence on the Litvinenko case to the Crown Prosecution Service.
