Family facing wait for funeral

The grieving family of Vicky Hamilton may have to wait months before they can finally lay her to rest.

The schoolgirl's remains were returned to Scotland on Tuesday, more than 16 years after she went missing from Bathgate.

Her body was discovered in a former home of Peter Tobin in Kent last week and he has been charged with her murder.

Prosecutors are now preparing their case against the 61-year-old and it is not yet clear when Vicky's remains will be released to her family.

Her father, Michael, sisters, Sharon and Lindsay, and brother, Lee, may have to wait weeks or months before a funeral can take place. The length of time needed by prosecutors to assess remains varies according to the case.

A Crown Office spokeswoman said: "We'll be keeping the family up to date and releasing the body for burial as soon as we can."

Vicky, 15, vanished while waiting for a bus home to Redding, near Falkirk, in February 1991. Her remains were found by police during a search of a home in Margate, Kent, on November 12.

Essex Police confirmed last night that a second set of remains found at the Margate property were those of Dinah McNicol, 18, from Tillingham, Essex, who went missing in the same year as Vicky.

The student vanished after attending a music festival in Liphook, Hampshire. It is believed she disappeared after hitch-hiking home with a man she met there.

Police are continuing their investigations inside the home. Detectives said the focus was now on gathering evidence as no more significant finds were expected.
