Family grieve for 'little man'

The family of a baby mauled to death by two pet dogs said they are grieving the loss of their "little man".

Three-and-a-half-month-old Jaden Joseph Mack was killed by a Staffordshire bull terrier and a Jack Russell at his grandmother's home on Friday night.

He was taken by ambulance from the house in Ystrad Mynach, South Wales, to the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

Neighbours said Jaden was staying with his grandmother at the time of the incident. Gwent Police have confirmed Jaden's parents, named locally as Chris and Alexandra, were not present.

Initial results from a post-mortem on Jaden's body indicate he died from the wounds inflicted by the two pets. Both dogs have since been destroyed.

A statement released by his family said: "We would like to stress to all families with young children and pet dogs that, no matter how much trust you have in your dog, something like this is always possible. We never thought it could happen to us, but we are now grieving the loss of our 'little man' who will always be in our hearts and loved very much by all of his family and friends."

The baby's grandmother, named locally as Denise Wilson, was treated in hospital for shock in the early hours of Saturday. Neighbours described hearing her screaming when she discovered what had happened to her grandson.

Meanwhile, six people, including two children, were injured when they were attacked by two dogs in Bristol.

Four people were taken to hospital with bite wounds after the attack by two Alsatians in Filton Avenue. Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) said a fifth victim took themselves to hospital while a sixth was treated at scene by an off-duty paramedic. None of the injuries was reported as serious.

GWAS said both animals were captured after the attack. A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a 30-year-old man from Bristol was arrested following the incident, and was being held for questioning under the Dangerous Dogs Act.
