Family pays tribute to gun victim

The family of a 24-year-old man shot dead at the weekend have paid tribute to their son and nephew who was "taken away in the prime of his life".

Dimitri Foskin was shot in the chest in a driveway outside a house in Newtown, Birmingham, at around 10.15pm on Saturday, and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Foskin's uncle, Merlin Flaherty, 51, said: "Dimitri was a very loving person.

"He loved his family, loved his mum, loved his sister, loved everybody. He always had a smile on his face.

"I just can't put into words what this tragic loss of life has done to his family."

He appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and help solve "this tragedy that has struck us".

Mr Foskin's parents, David Forskin and Gill Flaherty, both 49, were also present at the briefing, but did not speak.

Mr Foskin, who was unemployed and lived with his mother just 200m from where he was found in Hockley Close, had been socialising with friends and cousins shortly before his death.

Police revealed that in the minutes before the shooting witnesses saw two figures running through Hockley Close, with one man appearing to be chasing the other.

Police said Mr Foskin had left his home in nearby Guilford Drive at around 6pm, and was last seen alive in Kensington Street, where he had met friends, at 9.45pm. He had seemed "happy and carefree", but at 10pm people in the area heard a "loud bang", followed by a scream or a shout.
