Family pledge over Menezes inquest

An inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes could last up to three months, his family said.

A pre-inquest review will take place next month at Southwark Coroner's Court to decide the location and date of the long-awaited inquest.

Relatives believe a coroner could throw fresh light on how Mr de Menezes met his death at the hands of armed police at Stockwell Tube Station on July 22 2005.

Marking what would have been the Brazilian electrician's 30th birthday, cousin Alex Perriera said the family will fight on to get answers.

He said: "If Jean were alive today, I imagine he would have been living back in Brazil and celebrating his 30th birthday with his parents, family and maybe even a girlfriend.

"Instead, today there will be no celebration. His birthday only serves as a painful reminder to our family that it is two and a half years since we lost him and despite our long struggle no-one has been held accountable for his death.

"The police officers involved in his killing still carry on as normal while our lives exist in turmoil, fighting to get the answers and justice we deserve."

In 2006, Southwark coroner John Sampson agreed to delay the hearing until criminal proceedings against Scotland Yard were completed.

A bid by the family to stop the director of public prosecutions, Sir Ken Macdonald, postponing the inquest later failed.

Last November the Metropolitan police was found guilty of a catastrophic series of errors over the shooting and fined £175,000. Human rights group Amnesty International has called for the inquest to be resumed "without further delay".
