Family see mother die on plane

The family of a British woman who fell fatally ill on a flight to the UK after a holiday in Majorca were forced to look on helplessly as she lay dying.

Lesley Brooke, 41, from Sheffield, was taken ill during an Easyjet flight from Palma to Luton which left Majorca just before midnight on Monday.

The flight was diverted to Barcelona as two nurses and airline crew fought to revive her in the aisles but she was pronounced dead shortly after landing.

On Wednesday fellow passengers told the Daily Mirror how Mrs Brooke looked "jaundiced" in the airport lounge.

Her family said she had been checked over by a doctor before takeoff, but denied she had any medical problems.

Her father, Wilfrid, 64, told the Mirror: "She was fit and healthy. The only pointer to what happened is that she complained in phone calls to home that her feet were swelling up while on holiday.

"We just put it down to sunburn and left it at that. Nobody could have imagined it would come to this."

The Daily Mirror quoted her eldest son Gareth, 24, as saying: "There was nothing medically wrong with my mum. She was a fun-loving person and a fantastic mother-of-five. Her children were her life. We want to know why this has happened."

Mrs Brooke's father added that airline staff were concerned about his daughter at the airport and a doctor was called, who he said cleared her to fly.

He said: "On the flight she was asleep on (her daughter) Hailey's shoulder when Hailey realised something was wrong with her mother, and started screaming."
