Family selected for isle move

A Welsh family of four has been chosen to move to a Hebridean island after a worldwide search.

Neil and Deborah Baker and their daughters Elinor, six, and Anwen, four, from Llannon, Carmarthenshire, will move to Canna in the new year.

It comes after the island's owners, the National Trust for Scotland, offered two properties to rent to boost the population, which had fallen to just 15.

The offer to live on the island, off Skye, attracted interest from around the world. A couple from Scotland were selected earlier this year.

Mr Baker will now work for NTS to restore the garden of Canna House, the former home of the late John Lorne Campbell, who gifted the island to the trust in 1981.

The landscape gardener said he was delighted at the opportunity to work on the site.

"We didn't know anything about Canna when we heard the Trust was looking for people," he told the Scotsman newspaper.

"Our first visit was around the turn of the year. We were very nervous, but as soon as we got on we felt very comfortable. We took to it instantly. We live in a rural area at the moment, but are keen to get away from the temptations of the fast food culture which we certainly will be in Canna."

Pete McHugh, NTS area manager for the Inner Hebrides, described Mr Baker's appointment as a great step forward.

Sheila Gunn, 50, and John Clare, 58, were selected in March to take over a five-bedroom property which will be converted into a guesthouse to help cater for the 50,000 visitors Canna receives each year.
