Fans dejected after England defeat
21 January 2007
In Paris they came in their thousands, most hoping but not expecting Brian Ashton's "grumpy old men" to overcome South Africa.
But many could not conceal their disappointment as the Springboks secured the trophy.
Many fans, kitted out head to toe in red and white, slumped to the ground as they realised their dream was over.
Beneath the illuminated Eiffel Tower, thousands of England followers had gathered to provide vociferous backing for England. They outnumbered their Springbok rivals by around 10 to one as they crowded around the three giant screens on a chilly night. Most had been in high spirits throughout the day, with the beer flowing, but by the end the alcohol had started to take its toll.
As the Springboks danced with delight, England fans were left to make their way back to their hotels.
At the O2 Centre in Greenwich, south London, thousands of disappointed England fans streamed away after seeing their team defeated. Some started leaving the venue with around 10 minutes to go, when it became clear their team needed a miracle to win.
In Paris, shortly after the end of the game, about 200 French police officers in riot gear gathered in front of the giant screen in a bid to disperse fans.
A warning had been broadcast during the match advising fans that the transmission would be cancelled if bottles continued to be thrown at the screen. Despite the heavy police presence, there was no sign of any clashes as the fans dispersed.
After the game, Paris police press officer Olivier Deflon said: "There have been no problems and no arrests during or immediately after the match. Everyone was in good spirits and we are pleased they behaved." He said police estimated 18,000 fans had watched the game on giant screens beneath the Eiffel Tower.
