Fans devastated as England lose out

Millions of England fans were left devastated when England failed to qualify for the European Championships after a dismal loss to Croatia.

Next year's tournament will be the first major championships for 24 years in which no country from the United Kingdom has been present.

That was the European Championships in 1984 when hosts France won. It was also the last European Championships that England missed out on.

Next year's championships in Austria and Switzerland will be the first major championships England have not taken part in since they failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1994.

Croatia had already qualified before the match. But with nothing to play for, they soon found themselves 2-0 up.

England went 1-0 down after only eight minutes when 22-year-old goalkeeper Scott Carson spilled a 30-yard shot from Niko Kranjcar into the net.

Just eight minutes later they found themselves 2-0 down when Ivica Olic took the ball round the goalkeeper and put it in the net.

England were thrown a life-line in 55 minutes when the linesman flagged for a penalty after he spotted a shirt pull on substitute Jermain Defoe. Frank Lampard duly slotted it into the goalkeeper's right hand corner.

Wembley went into raptures when Peter Crouch volleyed home the equaliser after 65 minutes.

But Mladen Petric broke English hearts in the 77th minute with the winner for Croatia.
