Fatal fire operation shifts focus

The focus of the operation at a burned-out warehouse where four firefighters died will shift, following the retrieval of their bodies.

For five days attention has been firmly fixed on the search for three firefighters who were missing in the fire-ravaged warehouse.

On Tuesday night the three men were found and brought out of the plant in Atherstone On Stour, Warwickshire.

The bodies of Darren Yates-Badley, 24, Ashley Stephens, 20, and John Averis, 27, were driven away from the site in a black Vauxhall van late last night.

Another firefighter, Ian Reid, 44, was pulled out of the fire on Friday, but died that night in hospital.

A large-scale police investigation will now forge ahead, since the blaze continues to be treated as suspicious.

A dedicated incident room has been set up at Warwick Police Station and 140 personnel will be involved in the investigation.

The warehouse, which was last night the scene of an impromptu guard of honour, remains cordoned off by police.

Chief Superintendent Ken Lawrence, of Warwickshire Police, is leading the inquiry.

He said that during the course of the investigation, up to 200 firefighters who attended the catastrophic blaze on Friday night will be questioned by police. A total of 160 warehouse employees have already been interviewed.
