Graham Knight, 55, from Bridgwater, Somerset, said findings from the MoD's board of inquiry proved the RAF "betrayed" his son Ben, 25, who perished in a fireball over the skies of Afghanistan in September last year.

Reacting to the Board of Inquiry report, Mr Knight said families of the 14 victims would now "never be able to rest".

He also launched an angry attack on Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy, the Chief of the Air Staff.

Mr Knight said: "I am stunned by the report. I had this gut feeling about the plane as soon as I heard about what had happened to our son. Now it has all come true.

"The Board of Inquiry have done a good job. I had felt tremendously frustrated about the lack of consultation throughout their investigations.

"We have been waiting such a long time to find out but now I have read the report I understand why. I think they were afraid of what they had found.

"This proves there was a horrifying catalogue of failures from shoddy maintenance to the use of air-to -air refuelling.

"Now everyone knows this someone will have to fall on their sword and I think it will have to be Sir Glenn Torpy. He is the man who guaranteed Nimrods' safety."
