Father sectioned after girl injured

A businessman has been sectioned after his two-year-old daughter was found at his family home with life-threatening head injuries.

Alberto Izaga, 36, was arrested after the girl was discovered seriously injured at his flat on Albert Embankment in central London.

Scotland Yard said Izaga, who was in custody, was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. A spokesman said the girl's condition remains critical.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's child abuse investigation team are probing the incident.

Mr Izaga, 36, a senior executive of insurance giant Swiss Re, was arrested on Sunday.

Officers were called by neighbours to the luxury flats complex, close to the Houses of Parliament, after they reportedly heard screaming and shouting. Police discovered the two-year-old girl with serious head injuries. Paramedics attended minutes later.

The girl, who has not been named, was taken to nearby St Thomas's Hospital where her condition is described as life-threatening.

On Monday, the apartment was being examined by forensic experts and has been cordoned off.

Mr Izaga is a member of the board of Swiss Re, one of the world's most powerful insurance firms. He is described as the company's head of Life and Health Products, and in July last year he was elected to the board of industry body the Association of British Insurers.
