Fathers' rights protest at airport

Two fathers' rights protesters have been arrested after attempting to get on to the runway at Heathrow Airport.

The pair belong to an offshoot of Fathers 4 Justice, a spokesman for the campaign group said.

Operator BAA said the west London airport's southern runway was suspended for 14 minutes but there was no substantial impact on flights.

Police detained the men as they tried to gain "unlawful access" to the airfield.

BAA said: "This was a misguided and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to disrupt the travel plans of thousands of Heathrow's passengers, and we condemn the actions of those involved unreservedly."

Scotland Yard confirmed that police arrested and removed two people from the airfield.

Matt O'Connor, founder of Fathers 4 Justice, said the detained pair were part of a splinter group of the organisation but could not give more details.

He suggested there could be further protests in coming months as angry fathers sought to "take the mantle back" from anti-airport expansion activists Plane Stupid, who have captured headlines with a series of high-profile stunts.

Fathers 4 Justice campaigns for equal parental access to children and has been highly critical of the way fathers are treated in family courts.

In the past the group has been responsible for a string of demonstrations, many involving protesters dressed up in superhero costumes.
