Fears of more flash flooding

Forecasters are warning that southern England could be in for a taste of the devastating floods that have hit the north in recent weeks.

Thunderstorms and torrential rain are likely to sweep across parts of England and Wales on Friday, weather experts said.

The alert was issued as the seaside town of Filey, North Yorkshire, became the latest community to be hit by flash flooding.

Dozens of people had to be evacuated from their homes and all roads into the town were closed after a cloudburst on Wednesday afternoon. Lifeboat crews were also deployed to rescue people and animals who were stranded by the floods.

Paul Knightley, of MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said there was a "moderate to high risk" of torrential rainfall at the end of this week.

The combination of weather conditions is conducive to the development of heavy rain and thunderstorms - and expected weak winds will mean some areas are hit particularly hard.

Mr Knightley said similar conditions in past summers had led to extensive heavy rainfall and flooding.

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for all of England and Wales from between 11.59pm Friday to 11.59pm Saturday.

Rainfall of 20 to 30mm is expected in many areas but the total could reach 90mm in places, most likely in southern and eastern England.

The Met Office said the heavy rain could lead to flooding in some areas and could disrupt outdoor events and transport networks.
