Few men planning to drink less

Fewer than one in 10 men will consume less alcohol in 2009 despite Government warnings over excessive drinking, according to a new survey.

Just 9% of men said they planned to cut down, even though a third are known to regularly drink more than the recommended 21 units of alcohol each week.

The poll found that younger men were the least likely to want to cut down drinking, with just 6% of 18 to 24-year-olds saying they would make it their new year's resolution.

Men aged 35 to 44 were the most likely (13%) to give up or cut down on alcohol.

The poll was carried out for Rough Guides to launch its new The Rough Guide to Men's Health.

Author Lloyd Bradley said the survey results showed that a "worringly low percentage" of men were cutting down.

"It's obvious from other results that a lot of men are concerned about their health," he said.

"Yet it appears that giving up alcohol is one of the steps they are least likely to take.

"Simply because it hasn't got to the point at which it's affecting their day-to-day lives, many men tend to underestimate the creeping effect that regularly drinking too much has on their overall health."
