Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, is set to hit screens in December and also coincides with the 150th anniversary of the birth of the detective's creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Tourism chiefs are counting on the film inspiring visitors to flock to Kent locations linked to Conan Doyle, including some featuring in the movie such as Chatham's historic dockyard.

Other Kent places with Conan Doyle connections include Margate, Whitstable and Dover, while the film, directed by Guy Ritchie, was also shot in St Paul's Cathedral, in Liverpool Docks, and at locations in Manchester.

The second big film is Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Vanessa Redgrave and William Hurt, which is due out in May 2010.

Locations used in the movie include Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire, Virginia Water in Surrey and Bourne Woods in Farnham, Surrey.

The VisitEngland organisation is also confident that a number of other movies will help the continuing trend of more people touring in their own country.

Shooting of a remake of the 1947 film Brighton Rock, which starred Richard Attenborough, begins shortly and will include scenes in the Sussex seaside resort of Eastbourne.

Nowhere Boy, a film about John Lennon's childhood, opens in December and includes scenes shot in Liverpool and Blackpool.

Then in February 2010 The Wolf Man, starring Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, is released. Locations for this movie included the Yorkshire towns of Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield as well as Chatsworth House in Derbyshire.
