Final meeting as Sir Ian bows out

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair is facing his final meeting of the force's governing body.

The Scotland Yard chief will give a short speech at the start of a Metropolitan Police Authority meeting on his penultimate day in office.

The monthly full authority meeting will be chaired by London Mayor Boris Johnson, whose decision to withdraw support from Sir Ian effectively forced him from office.

And it will take place on Thursday morning at City Hall, a symbol of how London's new Tory administration has wrestled control of the watchdog body.

Sir Ian has survived some extremely bruising encounters with the Police Authority, including a vote of no-confidence last November, during his three years in office.

But it remains to be seen if he will stay to hear members debate his pay-off, reported to be in the region of £400,000.

Jenny Jones and Joanne McCartney want an investigation into what salary, pension and benefits Sir Ian was awarded as he steps down.

Asked earlier this week how he could justify the resignation sum, Sir Ian replied: "That is one for the lawyers."

Other items on the agenda include an inquiry into race and faith at the Met, London's policing business plan and the selection process for Sir Ian's successor.

Deputy Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson, who will present a report on policing performance and respond to questions, takes over as acting chief on Monday.
