Finance probe as police chief quits

An investigation is under way into alleged financial irregularities which forced a senior police officer into early retirement.

Terry Grange stepped down as Chief Constable of Dyfed-Powys Police after more than seven years in the top job.

An acting deputy chief constable has taken over after the rapid and unexplained forced retirement.

Mr Grange retired with immediate effect as an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation got under way.

But it is understood he only stepped down after asking Dyfed Powys Police Authority to back him, and being told no.

"He went to ask for the support of the police authority but it was not offered. He had not wanted to retire," a police source, who did not want to be identified, said.

It is understood Mr Grange's retirement comes after he was given a two-year extension to his contract by the police authority earlier this year.

The same authority said it had "accepted with regret the retirement of Chief Constable Terence Grange with immediate effect".

It added: "Mr Grange had indicated that he had allowed his private life to interfere with his professional role as Chief Constable.

"This has led the Police Authority to consider the Chief Constable's position and it was considered to be appropriate to accept his retirement."
