Firms put recruitment plans on hold

The recruitment plans of UK firms are at their weakest for almost a decade, with most companies intending to keep staffing levels the same, according to a new report.

A survey of 2,100 employers showed that most were putting recruitment plans on hold in the face of the economic downturn.

Employment giant Manpower said its study revealed firms were using temporary and contract workers to meet short term demands.

Managing director Mark Cahill said: "Employers have faced difficult times since the credit crunch and wider economic and confidence worries really took effect last year.

"This uncertainty is being reflected by new recruitment plans being put on hold and with slightly more employers now looking to reduce their staffing numbers than add to them."

The survey showed that employers were at their least confident about hiring than at any time since early 1999.

Firms in London were most confident about taking on new staff, while those in the South East, Wales and Scotland were least confident.
