The men were arrested after an operation at a warehouse in Thurrock, Essex on Tuesday night.
The Metropolitan Police said 3.5 tonnes of cannabis resin, 1.5 tonnes of amphetamine, half a tonne of skunk and several kilograms of "mixed cocktail loads" of unidentified class A and B drugs had been seized in a planned swoop.
Russell O'Cuneff, 49, Wattie Souter, 67, Patrick Maloney, 54, Derek Mercer, 70, and John Rowe, 69, were charged with the importation of class B drugs.
The men, all from east and south-east London, appeared in custody at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court.
They were remanded in custody and will return to the court on March 26 for the next hearing in the case, said a court spokeswoman.
