Some of the children were working on a shift from 4pm to midnight until it was brought to the attention of NHS Professionals, which runs the call centre in Watford.

Shift patterns have now been rectified to ensure that nobody under 18 works past 10pm.

A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "The Department of Health expects all call centre providers to abide by the terms of their contract.

"The Department of Health also expects all call centre providers to comply with employment regulations as appropriate."
