Flu call centre breaches age rules

A call centre providing the Government's National Flu Pandemic Service for England has breached guidance for employing under-18s by allowing 16-year-olds to work past 10pm, it has emerged.

Some of the children were working on a shift from 4pm to midnight until it was brought to the attention of NHS Professionals, which runs the call centre in Watford.

Shift patterns have now been rectified to ensure that nobody under 18 works past 10pm.

A Department of Health spokeswoman said: "The Department of Health expects all call centre providers to abide by the terms of their contract.

"The Department of Health also expects all call centre providers to comply with employment regulations as appropriate."
