'Flying vet' in US custody

An amateur pilot nicknamed the Flying Vet is reported to be undergoing psychiatric tests after landing his plane near George Bush's Texas ranch.

Maurice Kirk, 63, from Barry, South Wales, was arrested and taken to a psychiatric hospital in handcuffs after the incident, according a blog entry on his website.

His wife Kirstie said he had been trying to reach the US president at his ranch in Austin to thank him for help given by US coastguards when his aircraft crash-landed in the Caribbean Sea in February.

Mrs Kirk said on the Flying Vet website that her husband landed outside a prohibited zone around the ranch.

She wrote: "Realising that he could not get close he landed as described above and walked along the lane hoping to leave a message at the gate.

"He did not reach the gate. Instead a car drove behind him and he found two Smith and Wessons pointed at him by police.

"He was handcuffed, put in a police car while several other cars drew up (11 he thinks including the Sheriff) and taken to a police cell."

Mr Kirk was attempting to fly solo around the world when the incident happened.

He owns a veterinary practice in Barry but was struck off by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2002 for "disgraceful conduct" after 11 convictions, including assault. His wife now runs the practice.
