Fog worsens holidaymakers` delays

Passengers hoping to make a Christmas getaway endured further delays in the disruption caused by overnight fog.

Thousands of travellers were left stranded on Friday night as poor visibility prevented planes from taking off from Gatwick and Southampton airports while incoming flights had to be diverted away from both Stansted and City.

On what was expected to be the airports' busiest day of the year, the knock-on effect of the disruption left passengers on more than 25 flights through Southampton facing delays of up to two hours.

A spokeswoman for Southampton Airport said: "We're asking passengers to check in as normal."

Heathrow, which saw 215,000 passengers pass through its terminals on Saturday, reported that six departures were cancelled as the fog persisted.

Marco Petagna, forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "There could be widespread fog in southern and central England and Wales. When rain clears away, the sky will clear and mist and fog will form."

A record 3.5 million people were quitting freezing temperatures in Britain and heading abroad. Many are heading for sunny destinations such as the Canary Islands, Egypt, Goa and Dubai, while the most popular destinations for skiers were resorts in France, Italy and Austria.

Eurostar trains will have carried 150,000 passengers from London to the continent by January 2.

Those driving over the festive season should benefit from the Highways Agency's suspension of some roadworks on a number of motorway and major A-road sites in England. Roadworks remain on some key routes, including the M1 and M25, for safety reasons.

Forecasters say there is little chance of a White Christmas. The weather is expected to turn milder on Christmas Eve, with temperatures likely to be as high as 9C (48F) on Christmas Day.
