The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the tests in Norfolk were being carried out as a precaution and nothing had been confirmed.
A spokeswoman said a temporary control zone was put around the premises in Norfolk on Wednesday afternoon and added that test results are expected to be known on Thursday.
"This is a precautionary measure," she added.
"An assessment of clinical symptoms by animal health veterinary staff has been carried out, and laboratory test results are awaited.
"At this stage disease has not been confirmed.
"The containment and eradication of FMD (foot-and-mouth disease) is our top priority."
The animal being tested is thought to be a pig, on a farm at Hindolveston, which became ill early on Wednesday.
