Footballer dies in car crash

A promising young League One footballer has been killed in a car crash. Hartlepool United midfielder Michael Maidens was a front seat passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa car which lost control and smashed into a metal post on Teesside.

The incident happened when the car left the road near the Greystones roundabout on the A174 near Lazenby as the Corsa and other cars driven by friends travelled in a convoy just before 8.30pm on Friday.

Hartlepool's League One clash with Swansea on Saturday was postponed as a mark of respect for the 20-year-old player who made his first team debut against Blackpool in 2005.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: "With reference to the fatal traffic collision on the A174 the deceased, who was a passenger in the car, can now be identified as Michael Maidens, 20, from the Skelton area of east Cleveland."

A woman driver and her teenage passenger were among three people who died in a seven-vehicle motorway pile-up.

The 36-year-old woman and the 17-year-old boy, a back seat passenger, were killed when their Vauxhall Cavalier left the carriageway and careered down an embankment.

The 52-year-old male driver of a Honda CRV died in hospital after his vehicle overturned during the incident. No further details of the victims have been released by police.

Six other people needed hospital treatment following the incident near the M18 slip road off the busy M62 near Goole.

Humberside Police said it appeared that all of the vehicles involved were intending to take the slip road when the incident happened just after 6.45pm on Friday. The road was closed throughout the night but reopened on Saturday.

The injured victims were all taken to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where police said they were treated for 'non life threatening injuries'.
