Forecasters fear overnight snow

Signs that spring was finally in the air vanished as the weather turned wintry and looked set to worsen overnight.

Weather forecasters said they could not rule out snow falling anywhere in Britain. Snow fell over Scotland and parts of northern England on Saturday.

Temperatures have dropped significantly after an unseasonally warm week that saw the hottest day of the year on Thursday.

Forecasters predict that the wintry weather will continue to move southwards, becoming more widespread through England and Wales and bringing temperatures of between 0C and -3C.

Tony Conlan, from MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There is going to be a band of wintry weather moving south across most of the UK. We can't rule out a light covering of snow anywhere in the UK."

It will be another cold and wintry day on Sunday, he said, with snow a possibility in the South East first thing in the morning.

"The rest of the day will see sunshine and quite frequent showers," said Mr Conlan. "It will definitely feel very cold, with highs of 3C-6C across most of the country.

"There will also be quite a strong, cold, northerly wind over northern and western parts of the UK." April is known for its changeable weather, and it seems that this year is no exception.

Less than a fortnight after a white Easter, the weather became significantly more spring-like earlier in the week with temperatures soaring to 18C in a number of places.

Thursday was the warmest day so far this year in Inverbervie, Aberdeenshire, which hit 18.9C, according to MeteoGroup.
