Forest fear as tyre blaze rages on

Firefighters are continuing to contain a huge fire at a tyre factory in Nottinghamshire to stop it spreading to a nearby forest.

It is estimated that between 400,000 and 800,000 tyres were alight at Warsop Rubber Company at the height of the blaze as more than 20 firefighters fought the flames.

The village of Warsop remains closed to traffic after crews laid a huge pipe across roads and driveways to draw water from the nearby River Maun.

No-one has been injured in the fire, but Notts Fire and Rescue Service is anxious to stop it spreading to Sherwood Forest, which is only separated from Warsop by one field.

A service spokeswoman said: "We have got two pumps out there and a high-volume pump. It's imperative with this incident to make sure it doesn't spread.

"We are waiting for the tyres to burn themselves out. Sherwood Forest is only one field away and we are keen it doesn't spread in that direction."

An investigation is to be launched in the coming days to establish the cause of the fire, which began at around 9pm on Friday.
