Forest fire Britons on way home

Hundreds of Britons caught up in a forest fire drama on a Greek island are flying home.

Up to 750 UK holidaymakers were moved to safety when the fire threatened hotels on the island of Skiathos, but there are no reports of anybody being hurt.

The three resorts affected were Aghia Paraskevi, Troulos and Kolios on the southern part of the island.

Most major UK holiday companies include the Aegean Sea island in their brochures.

"Many of the Britons affected are due to fly home.

The question of whether flights will be leaving from the UK to the island is still being considered," said Federation of Tour Operators' spokesman Graham Lancaster.

"Holiday reps worked to move people away. We understand that there has been some damage to hotels but we don't know if anyone has lost possessions.

"We are liaising with British officials locally in case anyone needs clothing or new documents."

Mr Lancaster added: "There has been fierce heat in Greece of late and winds have fanned the flames. But we understand the fire is being brought under control."
