25 January 2007
The alarm was raised on Friday night when the youngsters, who are on a gold Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition and believed to be aged between 14 and 17, did not arrive at a campsite near Loch Laggan
They were last seen late on Friday morning walking along their planned route.
The search was hampered by poor weather overnight, but it is hoped conditions will improve.
Members of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team and an RAF mountain rescue team are looking for the girls in the area of Feagour near Kinloch Laggan.
The RAF also plans to send an RAF helicopter from Lossiemouth to help the search.
Rescuers plan to trace the route that the girls were due to follow in the hope of finding them.
An RAF spokesman said: "We have the route that they were going to follow so that is a very good start as we can cover each part of that and hopefully there will be an innocent explanation."
The youngsters are said to be well equipped.
