Four remanded over 1987 murder

Four men accused of murdering a private detective 21 years ago have been remanded in custody.

Daniel Morgan, 37, was found with an axe embedded in his skull outside the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, south-east London, on March 10, 1987.

James Cook, 53, from Tadworth, Surrey, Glenn Vian, 49, from South Croydon, and his brother Garry Vian, 47, of no fixed address, and Morgan's former business partner William Rees, 53, from Weybridge, Surrey, appeared before City of Westminster magistrates' court in London.

They were remanded in custody to July 31 when they will appear at the Old Bailey.

A fifth man, Sidney Fillery, 61, a former Metropolitan Police detective sergeant, also appeared charged with perverting the course of justice.

Mr Morgan, a private investigator from Islington, north London, was struck repeatedly in the head with an axe.

His £900 Rolex watch was missing but £1,100 in cash was still in his pocket.

It is believed he was about to expose a south London drugs network involving corrupt police officers when he was murdered. Scotland Yard launched a new investigation into the murder in 2006.

A sixth man was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public office and was released on bail on Tuesday.

He is believed to be serving Pc Dean Vian, Garry Vian's son, and has been bailed until June 2.
