Fresh opinion poll blow for Labour

20 January 2008
The YouGov survey for the Daily Telegraph found both main parties had been hit by a Liberal Democrat revival - the Conservatives dropping one point to 44% and Labour down two at 24%.
Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg will be delighted by his party's four-point rise to 20% in the immediate wake of his party conference at which he secured a commitment to seek public spending reductions to fund tax cuts.
The under-fire Prime Minister also continued to suffer poor personal ratings, with just 16% believing he is providing strong leadership and the same proportion rating him the best leader for Britain - less than half Mr Cameron's score (34%).
Nearly three in four voters (74%) expressed dissatisfaction and, despite his efforts in recent days, only 25% consider him the best politician to steer the country through the present economic turmoil.
More than two thirds (68%) agreed that he had been given a chance but had "blown it" - and almost as many (64%) judged that he "seems to have no real understanding of what ordinary people are going through at the moment".
YouGov surveyed 2,227 people online between September 17 and 19.
