Fringe comedy awards decision due

A stand-up comic who turned a bust-up with a train ticket collector into a comedy show is among a host of talent vying to win recognition at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.

Tom Wrigglesworth intervened when a 75-year-old woman was reduced to tears by a Virgin Trains guard who insisted she was on the wrong train after an error on her printed travel itinerary.

About 400 of this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows have been scrutinised by a panel of seven judges and three comedy punters, with the awards ceremony taking place on Friday afternoon.

Wrigglesworth was almost arrested for trying to collect enough money from other passengers for the elderly woman's ticket on the journey between Manchester and London.

Former winner Frank Skinner will present the accolades for the categories including the Edinburgh Comedy Award and Best Newcomer. Skinner won the best comedy show accolade in 1991.

This year's comedy award nominations have caused a stir because of the lack of any women acts.

But three-time nominee Russell Kane, who is up this year for the comedy award for his show Human Dressage, has defended the judges' shortlist.

The winner of the comedy award's £8,000 cash prize will also get the chance to perform at the Montreal, Toronto and Chicago comedy festivals.

Those shortlisted for the category include: Idiots of Ants for This Is War; John Bishop for Elvis Has Left the Building; Jon Richardson for This Guy at Night; and Tim Key for The Slutcracker.

Nominees for the best newcomer prize include: TV presenter Jack Whitehall; Carl Donnelly; Jonny Sweet; Kevin Bridges; and Pete Johansson - with a £4,000 prize up for grabs. A Panel Prize, worth £4,000, will also be awarded to a comic.
