Funeral delay for 'starved' Khyra

The family of a seven-year-old girl who died after allegedly being starved at her home have been that her body cannot yet be released for her funeral.

Police investigating Khyra Ishaq's death are still waiting for the results of three post mortem examinations on her body.

Members of her family gathered at Birmingham Coroner's Court for the opening of the inquest.

During the brief hearing, Khyra's father, Ishaq Abu-Zaire, told the court he understood the investigation into his daughter's death would take some time.

He said: "I do understand that it could be a lengthy process and police have explained to me the reasons."

Khyra was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital from her mother's home in Handsworth, Birmingham, in the early hours of May 17.

Her mother, Angela Gordon, 33, and her partner Junaid Abu-Hamza, 29, both appeared in court via video link on May 28, accused of "causing or allowing" her death.

Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull Aidan Cotter adjourned the inquest until June 26.

He said that would be 40 days since Khyra's death and he would expect the three pathologists carrying out post-mortem examinations to have notified him if further tests would need to be carried out.

He warned the family that he may still not be able to release the body on that date, and said he would make a decision during that hearing.
