Mourners packed Croydon Parish Church, in south London, for a private family funeral.
Among them were dozens of friends from the University of Leeds where Ms Kercher studied and former schoolmates from her life in Croydon.
Ms Kercher's parents Arline and John, her sister Stephanie and brothers, John and Lyle, were the last to arrive at the church. They followed Ms Kercher's coffin which was surrounded by colourful floral tributes and a photograph of the young woman.
The service was led by the vicar of Croydon, the Rev Colin Boswell. He said one of the main parts would be a short talk about Ms Kercher's life by her younger brother Lyle.
Mr Boswell is also chaplain at Ms Kercher's former school, Old Palace School, in central Croydon. A choir from the independent girls' school will sing a requiem, In Paradisum, he added.
Speaking before the service, Mr Boswell said his sermon would "hopefully try to bring some life and light into what is a very dark situation".
Ms Kercher, 21, from Coulsdon, south London, was found dead with her throat cut at her home in Perugia, Italy, on November 2. Her body was flown home 10 days later but her family were only given the go-ahead to bury her a fortnight ago when Italian police said they would not conduct a second post-mortem examination.
Ms Kercher, who was on a year-long exchange, was murdered on the night of November 1. Police said there was evidence of a violent sexual encounter. Her American flatmate Amanda Knox, 20, Italian Raffaele Sollecito, 23, and Rudy Hermann Guede, 20, remain in custody in Italy.
Congolese bar owner Diya "Patrick" Lumumba, 38, has been released from prison but remains a suspect in the case. All four deny any involvement.
