Further talks in postal dispute

A proposed deal was thrashed out last Friday between leaders of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier, which included a 6.9% pay rise over two years.
The union's postal executive has been meeting since Monday to discuss the deal before deciding whether to recommend acceptance in a ballot of the CWU's 130,000 members.
The union said in a brief statement: "Further negotiations took place last week between the CWU and Royal Mail's chief executive, Adam Crozier. Following those negotiations, proposed terms to settle the dispute were presented to the postal executive over the last two days.
"The TUC general secretary, Brendan Barber, has now invited both parties for a further meeting so that the CWU can clarify the remaining outstanding issues.
"In light of these developments it was also agreed to suspend the current round of industrial action. This meeting has been scheduled to take place (on Thursday)."
Wildcat strikes continued for a seventh day in Liverpool, causing further disruption to mail deliveries, because of a row over changes to shift times.
Hundreds of postal workers who had been taking part in unofficial action at a depot near Wakefield in West Yorkshire returned to work on Wednesday afternoon following an agreement with local management.
Up to 300 staff at the Yorkshire Distribution Centre in Normanton, walked out on Tuesday morning in an unofficial dispute over new shift patterns.
But a CWU spokesman said talks with Royal Mail management had resulted in an agreement and striking staff were returning to work.
