G8 united over Mugabe, says Brown

The international community is united in condemnation of Robert Mugabe, Gordon Brown said as the G8 backed fresh sanctions against the Zimbabwe president.

"This is the strongest statement. It shows the unanimity of the international community reflecting the outrage people feel," he said.

He spoke as the G8 leaders prepared to issue a statement which also calls on the United Nations to send an envoy to broker a deal.

Mr Brown said: "This is the strongest statement. It shows the unity of the whole international community reflecting the outrage people feel about the violence and intimidation and the illegitimate holding of power by the Mugabe government.

"What we've agreed is that we will send a United Nations envoy to press for change in Zimbabwe.

"And what we have also agreed is financial and other sanctions will be imposed on members of the Zimbabwe regime.

"To bring together Russia, France, Germany, Italy, America and Canada, all the G8 countries, with Japan, in putting this statement forward shows that the whole international community is now not prepared to accept an illegitimate government."

The agreement of all G8 leaders, who debated the issue at their annual summit in Japan, will further increase pressure on Mr Mugabe following his declared victory last month in an election campaign marred by violence and the withdrawal of his only rival over brutality against his supporters.

The hard-hitting statement was agreed as state media in Harare reported that talks had been agreed between the regime and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, mediated by South African President Thabo Mbeki.

But the MDC dismissed the claim, with a party spokesman insisting no progress had been made because "the vampire nature of the regime has not changed".
