Gesture player 'should apologise'

A footballer who appeared to celebrate a goal with a handcuffs gesture to show support for a friend jailed following the deaths of two children has been urged to "make a face-to-face apology" to the youngsters' family.

Amanda Peak, the mother of Arron, 10, and Ben, eight, who were killed in the crash said Ipswich Town midfielder David Norris had made life harder for her and sent the wrong signal to football fans.

Soccer's governing body, the Football Association, said it had written to Norris asking for an explanation.

Ipswich Town football club said officials were meeting Norris to discuss the incident. A spokesman said decisions on any action would be taken after officials had heard Norris's explanation.

Luke McCormick, is serving seven years and four months for causing the deaths of the two boys.

McCormick admitted causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving.

Arron and Ben, of Partington, Manchester, were travelling in a Toyota Previa people carrier when it was hit by McCormick's Range Rover on the M6 near Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, in June.

McCormick, 25, was returning from Norris's wedding in Bolton, Lancs, when the crash happened in the early hours. The court heard that McCormick had spent the previous day drinking and had had two hours' sleep.

Norris, a former team-mate of McCormick's, appeared to make the handcuff gesture after scoring in Ipswich's 1-0 Coca-Cola Championship win at Blackpool on Saturday.

The boys' mother, Amanda, said that Norris had "upset everybody".
