Girl, 4, dies after arson attack

A four-year-old girl who was critically injured in an arson attack on her grandmother's home has died.

Alana Mian, from Sydney, Australia, had been visiting relatives in Bolton, Greater Manchester, along with her parents.

She died on Friday after almost six weeks in intensive care at a specialist burns unit at Leicester's Glenfield Hospital.

Her 71-year-old grandmother Hameeda Begum also died in the blaze at her house on Little Holme Walk, Great Lever, on June 23.

Mrs Begum's daughter - and Alana's mother - Saima Mian, 24, a teaching assistant, was also treated at the specialist burns unit in Leicester.

She has since been transferred to Manchester's Wythenshawe hospital, where her condition has greatly improved, police said.

Her husband Fahad Mian, 30, an IT salesman, had returned to Australia before the arson attack.

Last month he and Mrs Begum's husband, jeweller Mumtaz Chishty, 71, made an emotional appeal for information to help police catch those responsible for the arson attack.

Mr Mian described his daughter as "cheeky and intelligent" and his wife as "an incredibly beautiful soul".

Mr Chishty said his wife saved his life after she heard the fire alarm go off. He was held back by neighbours as he tried to return to the burning house to save her.
