A rescue operation was launched after the boat, also carrying four adults, capsized on Lochcarnan on South Uist, in the Western Isles. The girl was flown to a local hospital but died a short time later.
The victim, 14-year-old Kaylee McIntosh from Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, was among a group of Army Cadets who set off from their camp in nearby Benbecula on Friday morning.
Around 40 cadets from 2nd Battalion Highlands, Army Cadet Force Headquarters in Aberdeenshire were involved in the training in Lochcarnan.
They were on three "rib-type" boats when one capsized, throwing 12 people into the loch.
Northern Constabulary said the boat was involved in Army Cadet "activities" and that eight cadets and four adults were on board.
The Army Cadet Force (ACF) is a youth organisation that offers training in a range of skills including fieldcraft and first aid. Boys and girls aged 12 to 18 are eligible to join.
An Army spokeswoman refused to comment on the boating accident, saying it was a civilian matter.
Stornoway Coastguard helicopter, the Barra lifeboat and coastguard officers from Benbecula and Lochboisdale were involved in the rescue.
South Uist is connected to neighbouring islands by causeways. They form part of the Outer Hebrides, an island chain off the west coast of Scotland.
