Girl drowned in sea after row named

A young woman who drowned in the sea after rowing with her boyfriend has been named by police as Claire Burns.

Miss Burns, 21, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, was pulled from the water by lifeboatmen at Blackpool in the early hours of Sunday.

She was taken to hospital but doctors could not save her.

Her boyfriend, who survived after being rescued by police, has now been bailed after being under arrest on suspicion of her murder.

The young couple had gone to Blackpool for a weekend break.

They had been drinking in several bars and pubs in the resort on Saturday night but had been seen arguing.

The last known sighting of the couple was near to the Metropole Hotel where they were again seen rowing before walking in the direction of the sea wall near to the Cenotaph on the Promenade.

It is not yet known how the pair ended up in the water and police are now seeking witnesses.

Det Chief Insp Neil Esseen, from Lancashire Police, said: "This is a very real tragedy and our condolences go the family of Claire. We are continuing to find out how Claire came to be in the water that night, and would repeat my appeal for anyone who may have seen Claire near to the sea wall near to the Metropole to come forward."

A spokeswoman for the force added: "A 21-year-old male arrested in connection with the incident has been released on police bail pending further inquiries."
