Government should 'close pay gap'

A study for the Public and Commercial Services union shows two out of three workers are concerned women are not always paid the same amount as men for doing the same job.
A survey of more than 1,000 adults also found that virtually everyone believed workers should be paid the same amount, irrespective of their gender.
The union called on ministers to do more to tackle pay inequality in the civil service, highlighting that the predominately female workforce of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), which is part of the Department for Transport (DfT), are underpaid by £17.5 million a year, compared to colleagues on the same grades elsewhere in the department.
General secretary Mark Serwotka said: "This poll, coming on International Women's Day, shows that the public know equal pay is still a problem and that it's the government's job to do something about it.
"It is scandalous that the gender pay gap stands at 19% in the civil service.
"The Government needs to address the gender pay gap, especially in its own workforce where pay inequality is rife.
"It is a situation which is being made worse by low pay and its policy to drive down wages.
"If the Government is to meet its responsibility to tackle the gender pay gap then it needs to start with its own workforce by ensuring departments conduct equal pay reviews and by setting aside the resources to tackle low pay and pay inequality."
The gender pay gap is more than 17% for full time male and female workers in the UK.
