Guardian boss quits Tesco board

Guardian Media Group boss Carolyn McCall has resigned from her post as non-executive director at Tesco amid a libel row between the supermarket and the Guardian newspaper.

Ms McCall said it would be "inappropriate" to continue in the role after Tesco launched legal action against the Guardian last week.

The retail giant is taking legal action against The Guardian and its editor Alan Rusbridger following a series of articles that claimed the supermarket chain had avoided paying £1 billion in tax by using an offshore structure for property joint ventures. Tesco has strongly rejected the claims.

Ms McCall said: "It is with regret that I have decided to resign from the Tesco board, but given the clear conflict of interest it would be inappropriate for me to continue in the role."

She was appointed as a non-executive director at Tesco in March 2005.

Ms McCall was named as the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year at the Berkeley Hotel in London earlier this week.
