Gulf War survey condemns Government

MPs from all parties have criticised the Government's actions towards ex-service people suffering from Gulf War illnesses, it has emerged.

The Royal British Legion has issued the results of a poll conducted among 121 MPs. It showed that more than 70% thought the Government's actions had been "very poor" or "inadequate".

The figures were released as a Gulf War Veterans' conference takes place in Birmingham.

The veterans will demand a one-off payment of £10,000 to those who fought in the 1990-91 campaign and who have been affected.

Sue Freeth, the Royal British Legion's director of welfare, said that the £10,000 payment was in line with other UK ex gratia award schemes.

She said: "Even though 16 years have passed, the veterans and the scientific community are still no clearer on the causes of their illnesses, some of which have proved terminal."

She said that research had confirmed that these Gulf War veterans were more than twice as likely to report symptoms of ill health and to be suffering more severely from them than their military contemporaries of equivalent age, gender, rank and branch of service.

Some 53,000 UK service personnel took part in the campaign.
