Hamed crash man on driving charge

A man who was seriously injured in a high-speed collision caused by boxer Naseem Hamed has been charged with dangerous driving following an alleged incident involving Hamed's wife.

Anthony Burgin's lawyer said her client was "both surprised and upset by this allegation".

Hamed, 32, served 16 weeks of a 15-month sentence for dangerous driving handed down after his £320,000 Mercedes McLaren collided head-on with Mr Burgin's car in May 2005.

Jane Wright, a partner at Irwin Mitchell, the law firm representing Mr Burgin, said: "Following an alleged incident between our client Mr Anthony Burgin and Mrs Eleasha Hamed, wife of former boxer Naseem Hamed, on 19 of April 2007, our client has been charged with dangerous driving.

"At this time, our client does not know upon what basis this charge has been brought."

South Yorkshire Police said Mr Burgin will appear at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on October 1.

Mr Burgin suffered fractures to every major bone in his body in the crash on the outskirts of Sheffield.

Sheffield Crown Court heard how the former WBA world featherweight champion took a "stupid risk" while showing off his powerful sports car to a businessman and fellow motoring enthusiast.

Hamed, who lives in Dore, Sheffield, was driving at a speed of at least 90mph on the wrong side of the carriageway as he approached the dip on Ringinglow Road, on the edge of the Peak District.

The carbon-fibre supercar, with the registration plate NAS 1, was in a head-on collision with a Volkswagen Golf driven by Mr Burgin, which was immediately stopped and propelled backwards by the impact. Mr Burgin's wife, Clare, was also seriously injured in the crash.
