Paying his respects in Manhattan's financial district, the Prince will meet families of some of the victims of the terrorist attack of September 11 2001.
He will later tour an advanced prosthetics unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Centre.
While at the World Trade Centre site he is to be asked to formally name the British Garden at Hanover Square, which commemorates the 67 British victims of the atrocity.
At the veterans hospital he will meet wounded members of the US armed forces who fought in past and current conflicts.
During this part of the visit Harry will be joined by Joe Townsend, a 21-year-old Royal Marine who lost one leg completely and the other to the knee when he stepped on a landmine in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan in February last year.
The pair will tour the advanced prosthetics facilities and post-traumatic stress disorder treatment clinic at the centre.
From there the Prince will go to a private dinner hosted by the British Consul-General.
The trip to New York - Harry's second to the US - marks his first formal overseas engagements.
On Friday he will take part in a polo match to help raise funds for Sentebale, the Lesotho charity of which he is a patron. He is travelling to and from New York on scheduled flights, paid for by the Queen. It is the first time he has visited the US since childhood.
