Head-on crash claims seventh victim

A 34-year-old woman left fighting for life after a horrific crash which claimed the lives of six others has died.

Her young niece and nephew - who remain critical in hospital - are now the only survivors of the head-on smash which also killed their two grandparents.

The collision happened on Friday night on the A429, between the Cotswold villages of Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire.

The girl, nine, and boy, 10, are being treated in hospital in Bristol. Their aunt, a 34-year-old woman from Stow-on-the-Wold, died in hospital on Saturday night. She, like the children, had been a rear-seat passenger in a VW Passat.

Their grandfather, 53, died at the scene, while their grandmother, 61, who was in the front passenger seat, died early on Saturday.

Four people in a Peugeot 306, which was attempting to overtake a Kia Sedona at the time of the crash, also died at the scene. They were a 35-year-old man, a 31-year-old woman, and a 15-year-old girl, all from Moreton-in-Marsh, and a 20-year-old man from Chipping Norton. All five people in the Passat are thought to be from Stow-on-the-Wold.

On Saturday night the Rev David Francis, vicar of St Edward's Church in Stow-on-the-Wold, said the thoughts of his congregation would be with the victims and their families.

He said: "They will be remembered in our Sunday services. One family were obviously particularly based here, but the other people had links with Stow too. People here are very shocked. What has happened has only come to light, it is a terrible thing."

A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said: "The 10-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl involved in the multiple fatal road traffic accident in Gloucestershire last night are continuing to receive treatment at hospitals in Bristol.

"Their families have requested that their condition remains a private matter."
