Heart scare for jockey Piggott

Former champion jockey Lester Piggott is in intensive care after being taken ill with a heart problem, relatives said.

Mr Piggott, 71, of Newmarket, Suffolk, was being treated in hospital in Geneva, Switzerland.

His wife, Susan, and daughter Maureen, were said to be at his bedside.

"He's in intensive care," said Mr Piggott's son-in-law William Haggas.

"But he's doing fine. I've spoken to my wife and she says he's doing pretty well.

"I'm not exactly sure why he was in Switzerland. He may have been visiting friends. And it's too early to say when he'll be well enough to fly home."

Mr Piggott, who won the champion jockey title 11 times, spent five days in hospital in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, in December undergoing tests on his heart.

Mr Haggas, a racing trainer based in Newmarket, added: "He has had a bit of a fright. Similar to what he had in December."

Mr Piggott retired in 1994 after 4,493 career wins, including nine Derby victories; his first coming in 1954 on Never Say Die.

He was due to attend a special race day in his honour at Newmarket on Saturday.
