Heavy rain threatens parts of UK

Storms from mainland Europe brought wet weather to central southern England and the Midlands overnight, with the North East and eastern Scotland set to be lashed by heavy rain over the next 24 hours.
This could lead to some parts of the North East receiving up to a month's average rainfall for June in 24 hours, it was predicted.
Brendan Jones, forecaster at MeteoGroup UK, the weather division of the Press Association, said rainfall could cause localised flooding in the North East.
But counties further west, such as Somerset and Devon which were affected by floods last week, are likely to escape the heaviest rain.
Mr Jones said: "Hampshire and West Sussex have seen the worst rain overnight, but the heaviest rainfall today is likely to be in the north east of England and eastern scotland.
"We could see rainfall of more than 30mm in a fairly short space of time.
"There might be a risk of some thunderstorms with lightning possible in eastern parts of England.
"However, most of the storms have been out in the North Sea and haven't yet shown signs of coming into land."
The Environment Agency said on Monday no flood warnings were in place. A spokesman said: "There are a couple of rivers on flood watch but that's not a particularly worrying situation."
